Mesmers have rather low dps till around 30lvl so keep it in mind.
Prefered professions (crafting):
tailoring, jeweler for obv reasons
weaponsmith and artificer for medium benefit
cooking because its fun
(you can only choose 2)
For build (PVE)
My fav is 0/20/15/15/20 based on phantasm (crit/bleed) with staff and sword/focus (<3 warden)
Other i consider good is based on illusions and shatter (?/?/?/?/? never tried to come with something) with scepter/pistol and greatsword for high clone gen.
And well thats all i have to say :3

Mesmer seems to be the best class to juke players in pvp. Yesterday I handled 3 foes at once, 2 escaped with very low hp and 1 I killed. And that wasn't even hard. So if you want to juke and pawn at PVP, mesmer might be your class.
And I love my staff and sword+pistol :)
